New Year's Eve

Tonight New Year's Eve is being celebrated here in j'lynn's world with me & the munchkin. The munchkin labeled our "party" as lame since it was just going to be the two of us. This was within minutes of picking him up from chica's and driving to the grocery store. I was feeling the love...

Our menu consisted of:

Crackers, cheese ball, & sausage...a success
Chicken wings...a failure
Frozen cheese pizza for the munchkin...a success
Homemade pizza...semi failure
Chocolate marshmallow bark...a success
Jingle Bell cookie pizza...a success

Now I'm stuffed and we are ready to ring in the New Year.... Bring it on 2011 & Good-bye 2010!!!!!

A Look Back At 2010!

What a year 2010 was!!

I graduated from law school (hopefully!! still waiting for those grades y'all!). I appeared on the record in several courtrooms during my Externship and basically became a lawyer this year! I found my passion during my Externship and over came my doubts of whether I have what it takes to be a litigator!! I'm so proud of myself!

I'm just amazed when I look back over these last 365 days... I've had a wonderful year regardless of all of the craziness that has happened. And I'm definitely happy to be ready to start another wonderful year... Here is to hoping that 2011 rocks even more than 2010 did!! Muah...

Last year on January 1st I listed several New Year's resolutions for 2010, so I would like to take a moment to reflect on the ones I accomplished and the ones that I didn't...

Get Healthier...
I made a resolution to continue to lose weight, eat better & healthier while working out more and drinking more water. For the most of this I accomplished this. Maybe not to the degree I would have hoped to, but I consider this one a success. I also made a resolution to test my blood sugar more regularly, which I failed at. I think I've gotten too comfortable in my belief that I have this under control and stopped testing even daily. I did get my skin much more under control for the majority of the year. I'm currently fighting a huge breakout on my left jaw line right now, but that is due to a switch my facial girl and I tried, which failed. So I consider this a success too. As for the sleep resolution to get on a better sleep pattern/schedule I think I was more successful on this than not. It was difficult sometimes though, but I think I got more sleep this year than the prior years, so that is great!

Get My Finances Together...
I did make a budget, but rarely stuck to it, but I was able to reduce my debt by about $3,500, stop using my credit cards and pay off BarBri & Kaplan. I consider this a total success and I accomplished this resolution!!

Get More Organized...
I definitely felt much more organized in 2010, so this too was a success in my book. Of course this is a constant struggle in my life. I love to be organized and I always think there is more that can be done to get better organized.

Better Communication...
I think this was a success too and an accomplished resolution in my book. There were times throughout the year where I faltered, but I think overall this was a success. I hope my family and friends would agree, especially my munchkin & my guy! How about my blogging buddies? Do you think this was a success?? :)

Enjoy Life...
This was definitely accomplished in 2010!! I definitely enjoyed life more this year. I laughed more than I can remember in years prior. I cried more, but usually in a good way...in a cleansing way. I definitely danced and sang more too! I hope I was a better mom this year and this will always be something I resolve to do better each and every year for the rest of my life...

December Cometh Around

I cannot believe that today is the first of December. It blows my mind to be honest. I just can't believe that this month has arrived. This year has went by so fast. I suspect that this next month is going to go by uber fast too.

One thing definitely felt like December arrived today...the weather. Between the snow flurries and the crazy cold temps (Hello...it is 27 degrees out right now.) you definitely knew that today was the start of December...

Today Was A 2-for-1!

Not only was today election day! Did you remember to go & vote?!? It also was my Papa's birthday!! He would have been 85 today. It is really ironic that today was election day, because he was always the strongest supporter of everyone's right to vote. I grew up with this wonderful man, a WWII vet, always saying, "If you don't vote, don't bitch!" He would also always remind us that he lost friends to make sure we had this fundamental right! Well Papa I voted today & thought about you as I filled out my ballot! Love you & miss you loads!!

Losing Time While On A Roller Coaster

The last several days I definitely have been on a roller coaster in my life and have been experiencing some crazy things. Let me reflect for a few moments here...

Thursday night I went to Sam's Club and did some shopping. A lot of times in the morning I don't have time to eat anything and end up running through the drive through at Burger King or McDonald's and ordering a small diet coke and two sausage patties. I love me some sausage! So while I was at Sam's Club I saw this big box of Turkey Sausage Patties, individually wrapped. I was so excited, because this would be so much more cost effective and healthy for me! My aunt helped me haul our groceries in and we went about the rest of our business that night. The munchkin went to bed, my aunt went home and while I was getting a few things done before I went to bed I heard a cough come out of the munchkin's bedroom. I instantly thought to myself, "Oh...that's not good."

It was only one cough and the munchkin remained asleep so I finished what I was doing and made my way to bed. It was around 2am. At 3:30am the munchkin climbed into my bed and asked me to rub his back. He felt warm to me, but my son loves to wrap up in multiple blankets while he is sleeping and it isn't out of character for him to feel like he was in an oven when he comes out of a bed. We both feel back asleep. My cell phone alarm went off, I stood up and looked at my cell which read 5:40am Friday morning...the next thing I remember was walking into my bathroom, looking at my alarm clock which read 7:12am. Um, hello?!? I just lost an hour and a half. WTF?!? I must have went back to bed and have no memory of it. Great! The munchkin woke up too and was complaining how he didn't feel good. I checked his temperature and it was 101.6. Talk about changing the momentum of my weekend!

Since I took both Monday and Tuesday off from my life this week I really couldn't afford taking the day off again. I called my aunt to see if she could help and she came right out. Once she arrived and we had put a plan of action into place I told her that the night before when I crawled into bed I thought about my Turkey Sausage Patties and the fact that I didn't see them when I was hauling my groceries in and assumed she had brought them in on one of her trips and put them in the freezer. She, of course, had no idea what I was talking about and indicated she didn't haul them in either. I began to wonder what else I was going to lose since it appeared that so far that morning I had lost 1.5 hours and now an entire box of Turkey Sausage Patties!?! Since we put everything in the pantry on the washer so I could rearrange my shelves to fit everything in over the weekend. She then uncovered the box of Turkey Sausage Patties that she carried in the night before. In the garbage they went... She felt horrible and apologized several times because she didn't put it in the freezer. I told her that I was equally to blame since I should have double checked since I was the one that knew I had bought things that needed to be put in the freezer. I'm totally bummed though...

Due to the munchkin being home sick I called and canceled my new cleaning lady, which worked out well because her father-in-law was in the hospital just being diagnosed with Leukemia. My aunt took the munchkin to the doctor and he was diagnosed with strep throat. Fun, fun, fun... The munchkin was feeling a little better later in the day, so I opted to still go and see my guy after work, but before I could get there I had to swing by the Defender's Office, drop off my time sheet for the week before and pick up the day sheet for Monday. Then I was off to see my guy.

After a great visit, I was totally exhausted, but opted to still do the rest of my weekly grocery shopping. When I finally got home around 11pm last night I made sure I put away all of my perishable foods away, but left everything else out to be taken care of in the morning. I knew I had tons of errands to run Saturday morning so I set my alarm for 6:20am so I could get things done. I had a plan of attack and was going to be totally ready to hit the ground running. Well things didn't work out that way since I didn't get out of the bed until 7:50am. Lost another 1.5 hours this morning. This has became crazy and totally unacceptable!! Time to grow up j'lynn and get your shit together! Come on already! Ugh.... I quickly got myself ready, took off to get my oil changed and tires rotated, then off to the salon to get my highlights done and a hair cut. I was hoping to get my allergy shot in between these two errands, but thanks to my inability to get my ass out of bed this had to be moved to later in my morning.

While at the salon one of the new assistants started talking about how she and her 2 kids were looking for a place to live. They had just moved from up-north and she was in the midst of getting a divorce. I spout off how I have a 3 bedroom, 2 bath trailer she can buy. Her eyes totally lit up! That is exactly what she is looking for! I instantly got chills. She said she was going to drive by after work. She has a friend who will be moving with her, so she wants her to look at it too. Thinking or maybe hoping she would want to come in and look at it today I knew I was in trouble cleaning wise! It had been 3 weeks since my cleaning lady had been in and I know she isn't available for emergency calls so I made the call to my former cleaning lady and she came down and did the job for me! I was so appreciative that she was able to help me out!

While she was cleaning I finished up at the salon and finished my errands. I think I was home 10 minutes with my former cleaning lady when the potential buyer drove by. She didn't stop and come in though. Maybe she thought I had company and didn't want to intrude. I don't know. I was really hoping she would come in this afternoon fall in love with my house and this would actually be happening. It would certainly be a huge boost to me if this could happen. Please say an extra prayer for me guys...because this would be so great if this would happen for us!!!

After a little nap this afternoon I picked up some dinner, made my way to my aunt's and after chowing on a good steak we headed up to our annual trip back in time for Halloween. The munchkin was not able to make his last game of the fall season this morning and had to miss the trip to McDonald's with his team, because of being sick. He was totally bummed. He asked every hour if he could still go tonight. Since he was no longer contagious we opted to go and he had a pretty good time. You could tell he was still feeling punky though.

Even though I haven't accomplished as much this weekend as I wanted it has been one helluva roller coaster ride for the last couple of days. Now if only I could either recover those 3 hours I've lost in the last two days or figure out how to get my ass out of bed on time I might enjoy this ride a little more these days.

A Bit Of A Change Up!

Due to some scheduling conflicts that I had in my schedule this week, I had to change it up a bit! As you know, Tuesday I had to do my oral argument for SADO, which then left me with no class Wednesday night. But since I have an awards ceremony to attend Friday night (more on that will come in a later post!), I moved my weekly visit with my guy to Wednesday night. This also lead me to having to move up my grocery shopping trip to last night! In addition to all of this, I've completed Trial Practice for all intents and purposes, so you will find that missing from my list of things to-do today!

Happy Mardis Gras 2010!!!

Well, it is here! Fat Tuesday, Baby!!

My goal this year is to not eat a paczki at work today! It will be hard, trust me! I'm hopeful that all of the good ones are gone by the time I start feeling weak! LOL

Of course today leads to tomorrow...Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Which leads to the next question, "What are you giving up or taking on for Lent this year?" This usually is a pretty big conundrum for me. I like to hear what other people have decided to do for Lent and then weigh my options. ;) I also usually opt to take an easy choice and usually fail at that as well.

This year I'm going to attempt to give something up and take something on! I'm going double barrel this year y'all! LOL For Lent I'm going to try and give up swearing. I have noticed that my mouth has gotten worse here of late and I thought this would be quite a challenge for me! What the fuck have I got to lose?! Hey, I've got to get it all out in the next 24 hours!! As for what I'm going to take on...the gym! I've been doing fairly well with going Monday nights after work, but then that is it. I'm going to attempt to take on the gym on both Saturday and Sunday too! I figure I'll need the extra stress relief come Saturday and Sunday for my pent up hostility that I'm unable to release with tirades of colorful swear words.

Reflecting on My Progress

As we enter month number two of the New Year, I want to take a moment and reflect on how I'm doing with my New Year's Resolutions:

Get healthier
~~continue to lose weight: Well, with the exception of this past week, I have continued to lose weight and since my net weight loss is 3.6lbs for the month of January I think I've been fairly successful with this one...
~~eat better/healthier: I've been eating out less, cooking more, and definitely eating more fruits and veggies. I could be doing better, but overall I give myself high props on this one too...
~~workout more: Failure here! I've made it to the gym once this year and it was only for 20 minutes. Yikes!
~~drink more water: I've been pretty darn successful with this one! :)
~~test my blood sugar more regularly: I've rocked this! Woo-hoo! I've only missed checking my numbers one night when I feel asleep too early... Yay me!!
~~get my skin under control: Slowly but surely my skin is getting better and better. :)
~~get more sleep with a better sleep pattern/schedule: Failure, again! If only I could get my stuff together maybe I could do better here.
Get my finances together
~~make a budget & stick to it: This one has been pretty slow to come around, but each day I'm doing better with this!
~~reduce my debt: I haven't made too much progress here, but I've made all my payments on time, so that is always good!
~~stop use of all credit cards: I've used my credit cards twice and that was at the beginning of January for books for school and one meal. Outside of these two things, I've been very successful here! :)
~~pay off BarBri & Kaplan: Failure. No payments made, yet.
Get more organized
~~at work: I have tons of piles and tons of stuff to do, but I'm organized. LOL
~~at/for school: Organized, but behind...go figure!
~~at home: I've been doing great here. Better than expected, so success is mine!
~~use better time management: Failure here. I need to stop letting things distract me or better yet, stop looking for things to distract me.
~~get things done: Slowly, but surely I'm getting things done. Hell, just check out my Friday To-Do list accomplishments! :)
~~stop putting things off till tomorrow (or next week): See above!
~~set a schedule and stick to it: Ups & downs here, but I keep aiming for total success here!

I Kicked Voir Dire Ass Today

This was the assignment this week in Trial Practice. I have fretted over this assignment for 7 days since it was assigned last Thursday. Preparing questions for potential jurors for our "case." The biggest stressor was the fact that there are 13 students in my class, myself included. Seven of us were prosecutors and six were defense counsel. We were originally broke into two groups. One of 3 and 3 and one consisting of 4 prosecutors and 3 defense counsel. Each person had to perform voir dire for five minutes and you couldn't repeat what anyone else asked in your group, so in my group the pressure was that you basically had to have up to 20 minutes of voir dire ready because what if you went last (#4) and the other three asked some of the same questions you had drafted.

I stayed up until 3am working on my voir dire last night. I still didn't have the good questions and felt like I was totally blocked. It was like I couldn't move forward with my questions. I had about five pages drafted and none of them were really powerful questions. I knew Prof. Arrogant was not going to be happy with what I had drafted. So about 11am at work I started working on it again today. Still feeling frozen, finally at 1:40pm I packed up my stuff and rushed out the door.

Class started at 2pm, I had to go to the bathroom, drive to school and get to the 3rd floor. Of course by the time I arrived at my car it was only to realize that it was blocked in. I finally got the attendant's attention (when I went to his little box and knocked on the window) and he moved the car. I texted my LSBFF and requested Prof. Arrogant's number and called and to tell him I might be a few minutes late because my car was blocked in. As the phone rang I contemplated telling him I wouldn't be there at all and that I was going to drop the class. (I guess I was even more freaked than I thought!) I actually arrived at 1:58pm!

When I sat down I still didn't have my shit together! I still didn't know what I was going to do...what I was going to ask in my five minutes and what happened if I was last of our group of four!?! I was mortified when I was told I would be the 3rd person to perform, i.e. the second prosecutor. OMG...I scribbled some notes down on page 1 of 5, got up and did my thing. I waited until after class to talk with the professor. I explained the freakout that I had been living on for 7 days because of this assignment and he said I did a great job and that I earned more points today than anyone else in the class! WTF?

I was amazed and living on cloud 9. Then I ran into one of the girls from class who paid me a huge compliment. She told me I did a great job and that I speak very well. WHAT?! She said something else but I can't remember word for word what she said, but I remember that it was fantastic! (This is probably due to the fact that I haven't been to bed before 2am any night this week!) Yay me!!!

With this wonderful experience I must declare I feel like I finally got my shit together this week! ;) Too bad I didn't get all of my reading done for this same class so I could say "Consider it all done." Oh well...maybe next week! :D

Organizing~~Starting Small

Maybe it is a chick thing, but I carry a lot of crap. Most mornings I exit the house with my school bag, my work bag, my lunch bag, and my purse. Some mornings I add the gym bag to my load. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen as often as I would like. In an effort to reduce my heavy load I decided to go through some of my bags and clean out what I really don't need.

The first thing I decided to clean out was my pencil case for school. Why am I carrying all of this stuff?

1 Sharpie black permanent pen

Seriously, do I need all of this crap?! Time to get organized and clean it out. What did I keep you ask? Look above...it is bolded. You would think it wouldn't make a difference, but it certainly does! Next time I'll clean out my work bag, which at times can weigh about 35lbs. YIKES!!

Nothing Needs Attention

That's right folks...by Sunday night I have either completed or at least started everything on this week's to-do list. When you do it once, you want to do it again, but even better and faster the next time.

In other news...I sucked it up and weighed myself again this morning. I was very happy to see I lost another 1.6lbs! Yay me!! :D I'm so happy about this. I've lost a total of 40.6lbs! I have another 22.6lbs to hit the next goal I've set for myself! It has been a long road to hit this point and I have an even longer road to go, but baby I'm in this corner at 322.4lbs and I'm loving every minute of it!!!!

*~~Even though I didn't go to bed until after 5am Saturday night/Sunday morning thanks to my neighbors who this time were really having a party, unlike last time, when I got home at 1am from Monster Jam, I slept till almost 1pm this afternoon. Plus counting that 1.5 hour nap yesterday afternoon before heading to Monster Jam I guess I should consider this done.

All Men Are Just Little Boys At Heart

This is something I've known for a very long time, but witnessed it again last night at Monster Jam. The munchkin described the night as "The best night of my life!" Isn't he a doll? I love my baby! :) I will admit, it was a blast. Getting there wasn't, but once we were there it was awesome!

The trip into the city was fine until we hit the city. Every single short cut was blocked, which took extra time for us to find out. At one point, we thought we found the way in only to be sent around in a circle by the idiots directing traffic. We finally made it there and made it inside to get to our seats 15 mins before the show started. Even though we were on the top level, we were only the second row in and our seats were great. The only problem we encountered were the two old fat assholes at the end of the row who gave you grief, dirty looks and blew their breath for making them get up so we could get to our seats. This lead to only one trip out in the 3 hours we were there and that was only to get munchies. Since there was only one way into the row we had to pass the fat old men each time. I wanted to say to them "sucks to be you, deal with it and consider it some exercise!"

The show was fantastic and all of the men were so into it it cracked my aunt and I up! Of course we had started laughing when we were looking for parking and I said to her, "Um, do you see the guy in the bib overalls? I don't think he has a shirt on." She agrees, laughing, and then she adds, "And he has dread-locks!" We bust out laughing and I declare, "Welcome to Redneck Country* at the D!"

During the freestyle portion of the night, which is my favorite part and I suspect everyone else's too, one guy flipped his truck early and the crowd went nuts! So what does every driver afterwards do? Flip their truck, of course!! It was so funny! The more they tore up their vehicles, the more men yelled, screamed and cheered!! It was great!!

Every January/February we have made it tradition to take the munchkin to see Elmo, but since my son declared this year he was too old for Elmo** I think we found its replacement.

*~~No offense intended here as my man declares himself as a redneck, so please don't take offense. I've actually picked up some redneck tendencies in the decade I've been with my guy! ;)
**~~Against my wishes, my munchkin is right. He was probably too old last year too, but I wasn't willing to make that jump to an older forum to carry out our yearly tradition yet. I wasn't really ready to make that jump this year either, but I did and I'm glad that I did it. Of course, this just makes my desire for more babies stronger...

Happy New Year!

As we all embark on this New Year and New Decade, many of us will set New Year's Resolutions. Some will call them goals and others will go with the traditional title of resolutions. Most will break them, but others will be able to keep them. There are the usual ones of lose weight, stop smoking and then some people have more unusual ones such as have less sexual relations with random women*. Some people will make one and others will make multiple resolutions.

I am fairly traditional with many things in my life so I make several traditional and some non-traditional New Year's Resolutions and without further ado...

j'lynn's new year's resolutions:
  • Get healthier
  • ~~continue to lose weight
  • ~~eat better/healthier
  • ~~workout more
  • ~~drink more water
